Position Summary

The Cheatham Nutrition & Cognition Lab at the UNC-Chapel Hill Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis, NC is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to coordinate a study the effects of choline, docosahexaenoic acid, and lutein in human milk on the cognitive abilities of infants. Coordinating this funded study involves recruiting exclusively breastfeeding moms and their infants from the community, applying the nutrition intervention, running all the sessions (including testing the infants on behavioral and electrophysiological assessments), and maintaining all study documentation. The postdoc will be exposed to a vibrant environment at the Nutrition Research Institute with biochemists, epidemiologists, nutritionists, and clinicians. Training will be provided for the study, but preference will be given to those with experience in electrophysiology and/or behavioral testing of infants. The project involves EEG data collection and analysis, as well as behavioral studies in the laboratory. There are also opportunities for the development of novel research directions adjacent to the primary studies.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Ability to conduct infant research, knowledge of human psychology and neuroscience, ability to attend to detail, and ability to compose error-free documents typical in the course of conducting human studies (such as IRB applications, descriptions, grant applications, reports and manuscripts for publication); ability to converse confidently with people from all walks of life to recruit for the study. Experience with Excel spreadsheets, social media recruiting, and infant assessments is a must.  Infant assessments include collecting valid ERP (electrophysiological paradigm) and Bayley Scales of Infant Development data. The successful candidate will have experience with these assessments or similar assessments with transferable skills. Valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Doctorate in Developmental Psychology, Psychology, or comparable discipline, or equivalent terminal degree from foreign institution. Candidate must provide approved foreign degree verification. Conversational Spanish and phlebotomy would be a plus.
