What is the UNC Nutrition Research Institute (NRI)?
The UNC Nutrition Research Institute is a research campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill located in Kannapolis, North Carolina. We are dedicated to discovering how nutrition and lifestyle choices affect individual health through precision nutrition research.
What is precision nutrition?
Precision nutrition is an approach to health that takes into account an individual’s genetics, environment, and lifestyle to provide personalized dietary recommendations. Our goal is to move beyond one-size-fits-all nutrition and improve outcomes for everyone.
Who conducts research at the NRI?
Our research is led by internationally recognized scientists, faculty, and students from UNC-Chapel Hill and other institutions. Our team includes experts in nutrition, genetics, cancer biology, psychology, biochemistry, and more.
What kinds of research are done at the NRI?
We study how nutrients and lifestyle choices impact health across the lifespan. Our research focuses on areas such as cancer prevention, prenatal and child development, metabolism, brain health, and the role of vitamins and bioactive compounds.

The NRI is a UNC-Chapel Hill research institute within the Gillings School of Global Public Health and works closely with other departments on campus. While we are physically located in Kannapolis, our faculty and students are full members of the UNC academic community.
