Steven H. Zeisel, M.D., Ph.D., director of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Nutrition Research Institute (UNC NRI), has announced the winners of the 2013 Student Art Contest. As part of the 5-year anniversary celebration of the UNC NRI, the contest challenged local students to create art and write essays about how they, their families and neighbors can achieve healthier lifestyles.
Randall and Rhaisa Weber of the A-Beka Home School received the Grand Prize of $100 in the Art Contest. Moira Hunter, who attends Jackson Park Elementary, was the Grand Prize winner of $100 in the Essay Contest.
“We like getting students interested (in nutrition) early and hope that a few will go on to careers in research,” said Dr. Zeisel. He added that the student artwork will be prominently displayed at the NRI to be enjoyed by staff and others.
Art Contest Winners
1st Place honors in PreK-3rd and $50 went to student Blakely Irvin, W.M. Irvin Elementary. Dolapo Ogunyomi, Wolf Meadow Elementary, received Honorable Mention and movie tickets. In the 4th-8th category, Grace Bucklow, W.R. Odell Elementary, won 1st Place and $50. Avery Griffin, Royal Oaks Elementary, and Nia Brown, W.M. Fries Magnet, received Honorable Mention and movie tickets.
Ellie Irving, Concord High, won 1st Place and $50 in the 9th -12th category. Erin Magee, Hickory Ridge High, Raquel Sanchez, Jesse Carson High, and Ethan Miller, Northwest Cabarrus High, received Honorable Mention and movie tickets.
Essay Contest Winners
1st Place honors in PreK-3rd and $50 went to student Dylan Perry of Carl Furr Elementary. David Irvin, W.M. Irvin Elementary, received Honorable Mention and movie tickets. In the 4th-8th category, Layla Saliba, Hickory Ridge Middle, won 1st Place and $50. Deeor Centeno and Harshita Gudipudi, both of Harris Road Middle, and Damola Ogunyomi, Concord Middle, received Honorable Mention and movie tickets.
Jack Miller, Northwest Cabarrus High, won 1st Place and $50 for the 9th-12th category. Rupesh Gudipudi and Agatha Almunir, both of Cox Mill High, received Honorable Mention and movie tickets.

The UNC NRI continues to educate students from the local community, building a skilled workforce to attract biotechnology industries. In FY 2012-13, the institute hosted more than 30 student interns from area high schools, colleges and universities.
