A Personal Perspective on the Impact of Nutrition:
A Letter from Deborah F. Tate, PhD
Dear NRI Advocate,
As a mother of three daughters, I’ve witnessed firsthand how vital nutrition is for optimal development, sports performance, and academic success. My journey as a parent has strengthened my belief in the transformative power of healthy eating and active lifestyles. Additionally, my experiences with family members facing chronic health challenges have highlighted the profound impact that nutrition can have on overall well-being as we age. These insights, combined with my academic research, fuel my commitment to advancing our understanding of nutrition and health throughout life.
At the UNC Nutrition Research Institute, we are dedicated to unraveling the complexities of nutrition. Our work in precision nutrition aims to tailor dietary solutions to individual needs, helping to prevent and manage the chronic diseases that affect millions of Americans. The connection between our underlying physiology, our dietary needs, and their relation to health and disease is intricate. Our work continues to make groundbreaking discoveries that will lead to healthier futures for all.
But we can’t do this alone. Your generosity fuels our research and enables us to tackle some of the most pressing public health challenges of our time. Through science, we can change the narrative around nutrition and create a healthier world, one discovery at a time.
Thank you for standing with us in our mission. Your support means the world to us and to the countless individuals who benefit from our work.
Sincerely,
Deborah F. Tate, PhD
Interim Director, UNC Nutrition Research Institute
Being part of the NRI offers an opportunity for me to contribute to discoveries that could lead to better dietary guidelines and health policies.
The NRI changed my perspective on nutrition’s role in health. You can exercise all day, every day, but if you’re fueling your body with junk, you won’t see results. Exercise is important, but it’s not everything, as I was taught growing up. Good nutrition is actually the foundation for so many benefits—from preventing and curing disease to even reversing years of bad choices and slowing the aging process.
