Empowering Health through Dedication:
A Letter from Shena Cunningham

Dear NRI Advocate,

As someone who supports the day-to-day operations of the UNC Nutrition Research Institute, I see firsthand the dedication and passion our team brings to advancing nutrition science. While my role may be behind the scenes, it’s clear that every task contributes to a larger goal—improving lives through the power of nutrition.

Over the past 10+ years, I’ve served in various roles for organizations focused on improving public health.  At the NRI, I have direct access to clear, evidence-based information to help me make healthier, informed choices. Often, I learn helpful tips from our researchers whose aim is to address real-world problems and raise awareness across a wide range of fields such as breast cancer, FASD, obesity, and brain health.  Their work is helping build stronger and healthier communities now and into the future. It’s exciting to see the positive impact that precision nutrition research has had in North Carolina and beyond.

For me, working at the NRI is more than just a job. It’s about being part of a community that’s making a real difference. There’s something special about working in academia in a small, storied mill town for the oldest public university in the US. The pride within the local community and broader UNC community is palpable.  And there’s a strong commitment to the success of the NRI and a real sense of collaboration. It feels like there’s a place here for everyone.

Your generosity allows us to continue moving forward, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Together, we’re making a lasting impact.

Thank You,

Shena Cunningham

I get to design nutrition interventions to improve health equity, including those who have been underserved by our current interventions. By designing programs to meet the needs of diverse communities, we can help our science to have greater impact.

Health stems from correct and precise nutrition tailored to everyone. Conducting nutrition research has a high impact on public health, as we focus on preventing diseases before they occur. Even when diseases do arise, nutrition can serve as a valuable tool in improving quality of life and enhancing treatment outcomes, showcasing the fundamental role that proper nutrition plays.
