The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and the ASN Foundation, in announcing the 2020 recipients of its scientific achievement awards (senior investigator category), have named Martin Kohlmeier, MD, PhD, the recipient of their Excellence in Nutrition Education Award supported by the Nestlé Nutrition Institute.
Kohlmeier, professor and director of the Human Research Core and Nutrigenetics Laboratory at the Nutrition Research Institute (NRI), also holds appointments in the UNC School of Medicine and the Gillings School of Global Public Health. He is a visiting fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge University, England, and editor-in-chief of BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health.
Kohlmeier is the author of several recent textbooks, including Nutrient Metabolism: Structures, Functions and Genes, a textbook in its second edition describing how the body handles about one hundred important compounds in food, from alcohol to zinc, and Nutrigenetics: Applying the science of personal nutrition, and is co-editor of Principles of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics: Fundamentals of Individualized Nutrition, the authoritative textbook of the International Society of Nutrigenetics/Nutrigenomics.
He is currently offering a course at the NRI on Precision Nutrition in Clinical Practice to train physicians in using genetic information and nutritional algorithms to diagnose underlying conditions and guide individually appropriate treatment recommendations. The 48-hour training course will be offered online so that physicians everywhere can access information crucial in helping patients understand their individual nutritional needs and dietary targets.

Although ASN’s annual event will not be held as planned this year due to the impacts of COVID-19, the ASN Foundation will host Nutrition 2020 Live Online June 1-4, 2020, during which Kohlmeier and all the award winners will be honored.
