Children to learn about nutrition through fun activities
The University of North Carolina Nutrition Research Institute (NRI) will host two community events in conjunction with the upcoming statewide North Carolina Science Festival.
Kindergarten Science Expo, “The Great Food Experiment”
From April 17 – 24, the NRI welcomes all five Kannapolis City elementary schools as they bring more than 450 Kindergarten students to the NRI’s fourth annual Science Fair. This year’s science fair, titled “The Great Food Experiment,” will help educate local students about nutrition, encourage healthy food choices, and inspire children to share nutrition information with their families.
In particular, students learn how to “Eat A Rainbow” from an NRI scientist and participate in interactive activities designed to teach health, wellness, and nutrition.
To help facilitate the science fair, students from A.L. Brown High School will lead the hands-on science activities, all which they created as a part of their early childhood education course.
The NRI enjoys this opportunity to collaborate with the Kannapolis City school system and hopes to create a positive impact through a fun atmosphere again this year.
“The Great Food Experiment” Science Expo is an event specifically for Kindergarteners in Kannapolis, including home-school students. Admission is limited, and registration is required. To register a home-school student, call Kelli Swick, Office of Community Outreach: 704-250-5034.
Roger Day in Concert: “Nutribrain Sing-A-Long”
On April 28, the UNC NRI Nutrition and Cognition Lab presents the “Nutribrain Sing-A-Long,” starring Roger Day, a Parent’s Choice Award winning singer/songwriter for children. Day will perform many songs, especially from his new album, “Why Does Gray Matter?” His hits, including “Sarah Bellum, the Brainy Girl,” and “Brain Food – Eat It Up!” are so catchy that kids and parents alike won’t realize they are learning about nutrition and brain development.
