Personalized Nutrition: A Diet for Every Individual?

February 25, 2019 – A new study published in the journal Genetics looks at how genetics interacts with diet to alter metabolic health (ex. body fat, cholesterol, insulin, and other markers of health and disease). Ultimately, this study finds that even diets that are considered healthy can lead to neutral or adverse outcomes when combined with certain genetic profiles. This study is unique because it looks at how an entire genetic profile interacts with various diets, rather than looking at how specific genes interact with a diet. Read more.

February 26, 2019 – “Diet-Gut Microbiome Interactions: Whose diet is it anyway?” will be presented by Johanna Lampe, PhD, Full Member and Associate Division Director in the Public Health Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and a Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington in Seattle. The human diet includes many types of compounds that are metabolized to varying degrees by gut microbes. The interaction between dietary intake and the gut microbiome may influence cancer risk in humans.

Nutrigenetics, Nutrigenomics and Precision Nutrition Short Course Registration Is Open

February 26, 2019 – For the fourth year in a row, the UNC Nutrition Research Institute and the UNC Nutrition Obesity Research Center will present the NGx Short Course June 3-6, 2019 on the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC. This workshop-style course will provide the fundamental concepts of nutrigenetics, nutrigenomics and personalized nutrition through cutting-edge presentations and hands-on experiences. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a personal DNA test and examine their own nutrigenetic data.
