NRI’s founding director, Steven H. Zeisel, MD, PhD, is among the 2023 Senior Investigator Awards winners named by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and the ASN Foundation. The category is one of several Scientific Achievement Awards bestowed annually by ASN.

Zeisel will receive the Robert H Herman Memorial Award. This award is given to a clinical investigator whose research work has contributed importantly to the advancement of clinical nutrition, particularly the biochemical and metabolic aspects of human nutrition.

A world-renowned scientist, Zeisel is credited with the discovery of choline’s role as an essential nutrient, particularly for women during pregnancy. His studies on choline were the first to create an understanding of the nutrient’s critical role in brain development of infants. His research led the field of nutrition to establish the significance of this essential nutrient for brain development and outline the far-reaching implications for pregnant mothers.

“We continue to be inspired by the achievements of our members. The 2023 ASN award recipients have made outstanding contributions to the field of nutrition research to impact education and practice,” said Martha Belury, PhD, ASN President. “We are thrilled for the opportunity to celebrate this year’s honorees and their accomplishments in-person at the Sheraton Boston this July.”

“The ASN Foundation’s Scientific Achievement Awards program continues to grow thanks to our generous and dedicated donors and supporters,” said Catherine E. Woteki, PhD, Chair, ASN Foundation Board of Trustees. “We are delighted to honor this esteemed group of leaders at every career stage and their significant contributions to the nutrition community and to better health for all.”

ASN will celebrate the 2023 award winners in Boston, MA, July 22-25 during ASN’s annual flagship meeting, NUTRITION 2023.
